Morton Ranch defeats Seven Lakes in surprise matchup...

The Morton Ranch Mavericks defeated the Seven Lakes Spartans 21-20 in a surprise match up on Thursday evening at 7pm in Rhodes Stadium. Both teams had no idea that they were going to be playing in the non-conference game against a conference foe until Wednesday morning.

Each school only had one day to practice and prepare for the game. You can imagine tensions and nerves were running high as both teams came in feeling less than prepared to play on one day notice.

I have to give both teams a ton of credit for coming out and playing hard-nosed ball. The game was close all the way through and there was no giving up or laying down by either squad. Seven Lakes went to the locker room at half time with a 7-0 lead. Morton Ranch rallied quickly and reeled off 3 straight touchdowns including an interception return for a touchdown. The extra point attempt was blocked by Seven Lakes on the second touchdown so MR was forced to go for the two point conversion. They got the conversion on a fancy form of the flea flicker thanks to a nifty play call by Coach Scott Svendsen. The game was at 21-7 before Seven Lakes could even blink.

Then like true warriors they fought their way back into the game. A long pass play brought the score to 21-14. Then a stand on 3 and 5 forced MR to punt the football. Seven Lakes quickly navigated the field and threw a beautiful pass with no time on the clock and scored. With no time left, and the score at 21-20, Seven Lakes coach Coach Kevin O'keefe opted to go for the 2 point play. The put their best player in motion across the field but were unable to complete the out pattern and lost the game.

What a battle! Both teams should be equally proud of their resilience and fight after this great game!!!
